Planting a Living Legacy: Reclaiming the Canopy in Greater Eastwood

Following the fury of recent Gulf Coast hurricanes, our local park canopies had grown thin. This season, the Greater Eastwood community rose to the challenge, hosting two powerful planting events to fill those gaps and invest in our future.

Restoring the Giants at Broadmoor Kretschmar Park

At Broadmoor Kretschmar Park,  a dedicated group of neighbors gathered to plant seven new trees. This was a symbolic and practical step toward healing the landscape. The heart of the day came when a resident shared a vintage photograph of a massive, sprawling Oak that once stood exactly where a new 15-gallon Live Oak was being settled into the earth. That photo serves as our "North Star"—a reminder that while these saplings are modest now, we are nurturing the "Giant Oaks" of tomorrow.

A Community Force at M.C. Cullinan Park

At M.C. Cullinan Park. We prepared for a small crew, but the community showed up in force! Over 35 volunteers—including neighbors, the American Youthworks’ Clean & Green team, and Council Member Joaquin Martinez—joined together to plant 23 trees. Despite the challenge of heavy clay soil, the team powered through with shovels and bucket brigades to ensure every tree was properly nourished and mulched.

    An Investment in Our Future

The goal of these 30 new trees is to provide substantial natural shade and cooling for our public spaces. As they mature, they will:

    • Lower ground temperatures to create inviting spaces for families and exercise.

    • Support local biodiversity by providing a sanctuary for birds and pollinators.

    • Improve air quality and overall neighborhood aesthetics.

    Our Program Earth Connect

Experiential Environmental Education for Young Children in Low Income and ALICE Neighborhoods. The Earth Connect program is a vital initiative that addresses the pressing need for experiential environmental education for young children in underserved communities. By fostering a connection with nature and supporting the cognitive and socio-emotional development of children, we aim to create lasting, positive impacts on their wellbeing and that of their families. With your support, we can turn this vision into reality and empower young children and their families to become passionate stewards of the environment.
