OUR STORY
We were founded in December 2021; originally a piece of land filled with dead and dying shrubs, the farm has transformed into a healthy ecosystem with Texas native plants reappearing and biodiversity flourishing resulting in the creation of habitats for wildlife. Located in Houston, TX, the farm is roughly two acres and has a focus on growing medicinal herbs, flowers, and fruit trees. Dedicated to sustainability employing a regenerative, no-till methodology in our approach of working with the land instead of against it.
Our beds are planted with medicinal herbs, flowers and fruits, and we continuously use leaves to cover and improve the quality and health of the soil. We have one thriving beehive with intentions to care for a total of five beehives.
Outside of our beds we use for planting, we are diligently working to restore prairies and have seen a return of fireflies, a positive ecological indicator for a healthy ecosystem.
Clay soil dominates the landscape, and we consistently use cover crops to improve soil health and quality.
Our goal is biodiversity and to create healthy environments not only for us, but for all the wildlife living in the area. We do not use any chemical pesticides but believe in creating a balanced ecosystem which sustains itself with natural predators controlling pests. Biodiversity is vital to a functional and healthy ecosystem, and it is our responsibility to interact with the land in a respectful and meaningful way.
In 2022 we established a "learning" nursery that allows us to “feed” the farm with plants, vegetables, and trees that we grow from seeds and nurse until we can transfer them. This allows us to secure a clean origin while learning the best ways to care for the plants as they grow. It also provides a place for learning and exploration for our education programs.
These two environments and practices have allowed us to explore different techniques and approaches to learn, modify and adapt as well as provide spaces for youth and children to experience, learn and connect.
We incorporated the environmental education aspect of our mission from the understanding that if youth and children connect and understand our interrelationship with nature they have more chances to internalize protecting it and at the same time benefitting form it as a resource for wellbeing.
